What’s Sucker Rod Couplings?

Sucker rod couplings are an important part of the pumping system in the oilfield. They join the sucker rods together and connect the motor to the pump which allows for power to be transferred between the two devices. These coupling should be able to transfer torque and vibration without failure to withstand the constant stress of the pumping system. Including rod couplings, reduced diameters coupling, and spray couplings, they all designed to API Spec 11B and manufactured from high-quality carbon steel or alloyed structural steel (AISI 1045 or AISI 4135). Spraying is an alternative process, a surface hardening technique in which nickel, chromium, boron and silicon powders are applied to the base metal and fused with lasers to create a harder, denser surface with a lower coefficient of friction and higher resistance to corrosion. Rod coupling is used to connect sucker rods of the same size, while reducer coupling is used to connect sucker rods of different sizes or connecting rod and rod string.
