1144 steel is a type of high strength medium carbon resulphurized carbon steel containing manganese and Sulphur, also known as Stressproof steel. It offers excellent free machining qualities and higher mechanical properties and can be treated to relieve the stress created by the cold drawing. 1144 steel has been used where resistance to deformation and wear are essential like gears, pinions, piston rods, sleeves, lead screws, racks, shafts, pump shafts, arbors, spindles, link pins, mandrels, boring bars, bushings, or can be used as an economical replacement for more expensive quenched-and-tempered alloy grades.
