Type 416 is Martensitic stainless steel containing 0.15 sulfur based on 410 stainless steel for free-machining service. 416 steel offers good machinability and small friction coefficient, and its cutting performance is the best among other stainless steel and about 85% of that of carbon free-cutting steel. It has better machining properties than other Austenitic grades but lower corrosion resistance while higher strength and hardness can be obtained by heat treatment to,  for example, its strength can be up to more than 830Mpa and impact toughness AKV≥27J after nitriding treatment. Stainless steel free cutting 416 is mainly used in automatic screw machine parts, electronic components and pump valve compressor parts.
