How to calculate weight of square and rectangular steel pipes?

The square and rectangular steel pipes are the commonly used pipe types in mechanical and structural, transportation applications, How to calculate their weight is a problem often faced by steel pipe suppliers, which is related to quotation and transportation cost. We should remember the formula, that is, weight = density × volume = density ×(cross-sectional area × length) that is: M =ρ×V=ρ×(F×L). The key is mainly to calculate the cross-sectional area.

The cross-section shapes of square and rectangular tubes are shown in the figure below, which can be rounded corners and right angles. The R Angle of the rounded tubes is usually ignored in the calculation. The hollow section area should be:

Square tube: F=4×(A-D)×D

Rectangle tube: F=2×(A+B-2D)×D

A = length or side length, B = width, D = thickness

For example, carbon steel rectangular pipe with size 50mm×20mm×3mm and length of 6 meters, the weight: 2×(50+20-2×3)×3×6000×0.00000785=18.0864(kg)

The weight of 304 square tube :[(side length ×4) ÷ 3.14-thickness]× thickness × density (0.02491) × length

The weight of 304 rectangular tube :[(length + width) ×2÷3.14- thickness]× thickness × density (0.02491) × length
